AYUSH COURSES: AYUSH stands for A- Ayurvedic, Y-Yoga, U-Unani, S-Siddha -Homeopathy. Here we will mainly focus on Ayurveda, Yoga, and Homeopathy.

Ayurvedic

The degree that one
will get after completing the Ayurvedic medicine course is BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery). Ayurveda is deeply woven into Indian culture and traditions. There are many advantages of using Ayurvedic medicines. Firstly, it focuses on treating root causes, not just symptoms, and it has few side effects as it uses natural herbs, plants, and minerals compared to using chemicals in modern medicine. So, the Government of India is actively promoting Ayurveda

Duration: 5.5 years (including Internship)

Eligibility: One must score around 400-450(general category) in NEET to secure a seat in a decent tier 1 government college (As per 2024 cut-off data), and one should have passed class 12th board with 50% marks.

Jobs after completion of BAMS:

Ayurvedic Doctor(practitioner),

Medical Officer at government hospitals, health centers, or Ayurvedic wellness centers.  Government jobs are available through UPSC, State PSC’s and AYUSH ministry recruitment.

Research Officer: One can join as a research officer in Ayurvedic research institutions like CCRAS (Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences). It has 30 peripheral institutes across the country. Healthcare Administration: Students interested in management can pursue an MBA in hospital management.

 Yoga

If one wishes to do a degree course in Yoga, then one should go for BNYS (Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic sciences). The aim of Naturopaths is to enhance a patient's health gradually and gently, empowering and inspiring them to adopt lifestyle modifications to sustain long-term health. The goal of treatment is to address the physical, emotional, and mental facets of the body as a whole.

BNYS program mainly covers vast range of subjects that incorporates traditional naturopathy and modern medical sciences. The main areas of study are Anatomy/Physiology/Biochemistry/Pathology and biochemistry from modern medical studies along with Principles of Naturopathy, Hydrotherapy, Mud Therapy, Fasting Therapy and Nutrition and Dietetics etc. Major part of this course deals with significance of yoga and meditation.

Duration: 5.5 years (including Internship)

Eligibility: Passed 12th Standard with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Note: Admission is possible through NEET and merit based (based on class 12 board exam marks)

BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

It is an undergraduate degree program in homeopathy, typically lasting five and a half years, which includes a year-long internship.

Homeopathy originated in Germany, So It's also popular in Western world, unlike Ayurveda, which is more popular in India. After completion of the BHMS degree, you will be called a doctor. You are also authorized to put ‘Dr..’ before your name. BHMS graduates also can open their own clinics, and you can prescribe homeopathic medicines. Generally, BHMS doctors cannot prescribe allopathic medicines unless it is an emergency. Generally, homeopathic medicines work best with patients having any kind of chronic ailments like any kind of skin infection, palm sweating, migraine etc.

If you get a government job, your starting salary can be in the range of Rs. 35000 -50000. As you gain experience, your earning potential also goes up. Earning potential can increase many folds if one continuously works on skills and upgrades knowledge. Opening a homeopathic clinic is cheaper than opening an allopathic clinic.

All Public sector undertakings (PSU) like NTPC/IOCL/Coal India/ONGC recruit BHMS doctors for their hospitals, serving their employees.
